Did you know that "ta" meant "thank you"? and that a solicitor was a lawyer? that a "docket" was receipt? A chemist is a pharmacy, thongs are flip flops and rubbers are erasers. A pusher is a stroller, a trolley is a shopping cart and to give a "tinkle" is to call someone on the phone. And to have a "nurse" is a cuddle and not breastfeeding. Who would have thought? when my 83 year old granny wanted to nurse Silas I had to think about it :)
I also found out that talking on my cell phone while driving could cost me thousands of dollars. Apparently you're supposed to pull over to answer your phone. I just try to conceal it while driving :) Get this....if you water your lawn or use any water for that matter outside your house like to wash your car, during a day that water isn't to be used, you could get a fine of like $100,000! No kidding. The gov't is really cracking down on excessive water users. funny, or not so much. In a land surrounded by water, we've got none for back up. Bummer. So turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
I found out at Silas' swimming lessons that we've been singing a different version of "Ring Around the Rosie". Here it's sung..."Ring a Ring a Rosie, pocket full of poesies, a tissue a tissue, we all fall down..." Needless to say, one can get quite confused in a simple conversation here in Oz.
